Motivations for mobility management

There are many reasons for starting to plan and implement mobility management. In most cases they are influenced by particular circumstances.

Thus, for example a hospital may perceive that poor site access is affecting the delivery costs, staff punctuality or even ambulance response to emergencies, or else there may apparently be an insufficient amount of parking for the level of demand experienced.

Meanwhile a business may have problems with its neighbours or shareholders and decide to improve its social and/or environmental image by introducing a package of mobility management measures.

Another motivation could be financial - i.e. to save space or money, perhaps by looking to cut costs of business travel or reducing parking provision.

Recruitment and retention issues too are becoming increasingly important to organisations and consequently have sought to develop benefit packages that include mobility management components.

Finally, planning and regulations often now require organisations wishing to build new developments or expand exisiting sites to submit a mobility management plan to a local authority in return for planning permission, while environmental laws are beginning to be used by councils as a means of limiting car trips.
