Profile and Problem Southwark lies on the south side of the Thames, directly opposite Westminster, in London. The borough of Southwark has a number of serious problems, one of which is traffic congestion. Congested traffic is detrimental to the environment and impacts on travel time and the predictability of the trip. Many people who live and work in Southwark depend on their car. 27% of the people who work in the borough travel to work by car. This leads to serious traffic congestion, especially in the morning rush hour. The greatest problems occur in the north part of the borough. The introduction of the congestion charging zone in London (the north part of Southwark lies within the zone) has impacted on travel behaviour. And yet, traffic congestion continues to be a problem.
In addition to congestion, poor air quality is a significant problem in Southwark. In the borough, air pollution is caused mainly by road traffic. With the growth in recent years of the borough's population and job opportunities (employment has increased by 30% between 1991 and 2002), traffic and the associated problems of congestion and air pollution are in danger of increasing.
Reducing the use of cars and improving the alternatives are crucial to reducing congestion and air pollution.
